Self Evaluation

Through this year we have been writing essays based on the main character's characterization, and also supporting with evidence from the book quotes. In the alchemis essay I had demonstrated appropriate ideas an content, because I have appeared to know a clear understanding of the topic and had also included many details to support with evidence.

Also I have cleary stated my ideas. For example, in the Alchemist essay I have clearly explained why perseverance, courage and confidence made him successful to his goals. However in my Julius Caesar essay, though I was on topic with little details I didnt explain how my quotations had relate to the main idea of the paragraph. Therefore, I think I could improve on my writing skills better by expressing an interesting and relevant details and suitable quotaions from the book, explaining clearly how the quotation relate. Sometimes, I do go off topic, therefore maybe I should improve on it too.

My writing demonstrates appropriate organization in the Alchemist essay because I have clear thesis statement and pretty good topic and conclusions. However, in Julius Caesar essay I didnt really have appropriate organization, because my concluding sentence wasnt strong enough neither my topic sentence. Also the thesis statement was a little bit un clear. I could improve my writing to demonstrate better organization by checking if my conclusion summarizes all my ideas and to form context prior.

By comparing my Alchemist and Julius Caesar essay, I didnt make an improvement, because I was really poor with organization and supporting with evidence and how the quotes relate and sometimes by going off topic. For Julius Caesar essay, I didnt support my sentences strongly, and didn't really express my thoughts about Brutus characterization . It was also hard for the readers to understand the message that i wanted to communicate through this essay. However, in Santiago's journey as there was plenty time, i showed deeper understanding on the topic and wrote developed ideas supporting with significant quotes.

In this two essay's I have communicated effectively because though I was poor at explaining the c quotaions I have actually stated pretty good details in order to make the reader undersatnd it. Also I tried to write significant details to connect back to the topic and my ideas. in order to communicate my thought clearly with audiences. To achieve this goal, I tried to give significant and well-supported details to prove my ideas and topics. I hope I improve my writing skill to communicate effectively with readers and write better essay.

Brutus motivators

Brutus is known as a great noble man in the Roman as he always cares and thinks of his countrymen before himself. Therefore, the people of Rome respects and honor Brutus for his doings. One main role that Brutus did for Rome was, he thought he could save Rome by Caesar’s death, because as he was a friend with Caesar he knew that Caesar was a dictator for Rome. In addition, Honor and Patriotism is Brutus’s motivator, as he believes that Caesar’s death will save Rome and provide freedom.

Brutus values his honor most in his life as he thinks Caesar is like a dictator who will ruin Rome; therefore he believes in himself that he should be honorable for Rome. Also the people of Rome respects and honor Brutus for his doings as he is trying to save and care for Rome. Hence, Brutus is an honorable man who is confident in his doings, as he believes he is right. Brutus kills his friend not for his personal reason but for Rome, because he cares and loves Rome and wants to prevent freedom for his countrymen. (Act two, Scene1, line 163~183) In this quotation Brutus tells Cassius that they are not killing Caesar for their own personal reason therefore they shouldn’t kill Caesar violently. Moreover, Brutus says they are not butchers and should be called sacrificers, and so they should carve Caesar as a dish fit for the gods to prove to the Romans that they are healers and not murders. Brutus thinks that they shouldn’t be hiding themselves from killing Caesar, as he thinks the conspirators and he has done nothing wrong to be hidden. Therefore, he shows he is an honorable man by trying to face after killing Caesar, because he has no doubts to hide himself. Afterwards, the conspirators and Brutus killed Caesar he goes out to the capitol to face and show his honor toward Rome. (Act three, Scene two, line 13~32) In this quotation Brutus proves his reasons on why he has killed Caesar, and he says that it was because he loves his countrymen more than his friend. Moreover, Brutus asks the people of Rome to believe in him as he thinks he has done the right thing for Rome and has no doubt killing Caesar for Rome. Brutus is truly an honorable man who faces his challenges and always proves with evidence to show that he has done nothing wrong and has done goods for Rome.

Brutus is an honorable men and also patriotism, as he works on to prevent freedom for his countrymen and to keep save of Rome. Therefore, Brutus has joined the conspirators to stop Caesar from misusing his power and his dictatorship towards Rome. Brutus had joined the conspirator also to assassinate Caesar. (Act one, Scene2, Line 160~173) In this quotation, Brutus is slowly joining into the conspirator as he has hope to save Rome from Caesar misusing his power and dictatorship for Rome. This shows that Brutus truly loves his countrymen than his friend, and wants to protect Rome from any danger. In order to prove that Brutus has no personal reason toward Caesar, and is doing it for his country. (Act two, scene one Line11~33)

Collage script for Imovie and SLR Reflection

Collage script for Imovie:

This is my collage, showing the timeline of the conflicts and achievements the lost boys have been through their life. My six-word is “Despair, struggling alone. Is there hope?” The six-word memoir I wanted to express was the sufferings that lost boys have been through and the hope they got when they were migrating to America from the refugee camp at Kenya. I have used images of civil war that occurred between north and south Sudan, and by this conflict there is an image of death and people suffering. For this picture I have included the word ‘Death and Despair’ because this moment was the most suffering time that the lost boys have faced and so as the Sudanese people. Also, this picture was included to express the empathy for the lost boys. The country shape of Sudan’s picture is placed in my collage showing their forced migration to Kenya. The word “Struggling” I have included next to the forced migration sign was to demonstrate the struggling the lost boys have faced overcoming the death from getting caught by a lion and the army of North Sudanese. I have also included a picture of their daily life in Sudan before moving to Kenya. There are pictures of Sudanese gathered around and dancing with their community and mostly farming. Also, there’s a picture of an old man suffering from hunger, and dying from hunger as well. This picture was to portray in my collage to show that they were struggling even before civil war began. The arrow pointing toward the plane shows the lost boy’s migration to America, and as they were in the plane they felt they were going to heaven, therefore it gave them a hope to start a new life. The voice text “Is there hope” was in the lost boy’s mind when they were migrating to America, because for them everything was going to be brand new. Therefore, I have placed a flower and the sunshine picture to symbolize the meaning of hope. This part of my collage is very significant because achieving hope can actually lead you into totally different direction from losing hope. As the plane faces down to the down right hand corner, and it was pointing to the direction where they were migrating to. America. There is an American flag to show they have been migrated to America, and also to represent their daily life, suffering, and the achievements they made (around the flag.) The voice text ‘alone ‘was to express the feelings the lost boys have felt during their live hood in America. The lost boys were feeling left out, alone, and depressed because they were away from their home country. It was also hard for them to assimilate to a new culture when all the people around them were Americans. At the top right hand corner, there are symbols and pictures that are demonstrated to give a message to the audience to take an action in order to help the lost boys get hope. It is the peace sign and money. So take an action if you want to help them find hope, and remember achieving hope leads you into a totally different direction from losing hope!

SLR Reflection.

Think Creatively:

I have used different types of technique in order to show the meaning of my collage informing how pitiful the people are surviving in Sudan. I have used thick texture to express my six-word memoir, which was despair, suffering alone, is there hope? Moreover, I included a picture of Sudan’s flag and America’s flag to show their migrations. The other pictures showing lots of death and lost boys of famine are included to create empathy for the audience.

Reason Critically

I have used voice in my collage to show the lost boys’ characterization and the lifestyle they have been through. The voice texts are my six word memoir, because death and hope portrays a clear image of lost boys’ characterization which is brave. It is because even though it was hard for them to face their family and friend’s death by themselves they still got a hope to live a better life by overcoming fears at the end. Moreover, the symbols of hope such as heaven and sunshine were the thought they had before they started their new life at America.

Communicate effectively

The people who were suffering and overcoming death and hunger, I have used this picture to inform the awareness of the lost boys tragic and sufferings. Also I have shown the Sudanese people are still in danger in aspects by cutting the outline of the picture wavy (to show they are struggling.)

Live ethically

In the collage I have represented pictures and my six word memoir to express empathy for the lost boys and by this pictures and the voice text I have included shows the serious conflict in Sudan. Therefore I think by looking at my collage it will help the peoples mind to take an action in order to help lost boys find hope. Also I have putted peace signs and to donate money for the audience to start taking an action as they feel empathy for the lost boys.

The lost boys of Sudan

The lost boys from Sudan from the Dinka tribe had escaped from their country, because of the civil war that occurred between north and south Sudan. While the Dinka tribe fleed to Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, they went through lots of sufferings with bad conditions. After some time, the lost boys had been chosen to migrate to America where they thought it was like going to heaven. Peter was one of the lost boys who got chosen to migrate to America and he has also dreamed of going to heaven. However, as time passed by Peter's mind started to change, it wasn't easy as he thought. Peter has faced lots of difficulties trying to assimilate into new culture, and to actually fit in the group. Moreover, Peter thought he was being unfair and burden to his friends because he wasn't getting paid enough from his work to share room with his friends, and because he thought he wasn’t achieving his goal which is to get an education, and therefore Peter leaves his friends and goes to Kansas. he thought that he was becoming a burden to his friends and leaves Houston for Kansas. One reason that peter have faced difficulties was because of culture shock, as America and Africa have a totally different levels of being uncivilized. The lost boys were living at the refugee camp, therefore they have been living in their culture way all through their life. This shows that the lost boys were very uncivilized because they have been keep using the same way over again. However, in America they have learned that they could live a easier life just by learning new laws, transportation and getting food so easily. It is because in the refugee camp they have been struggling from hunger. Therefore, Peter have been facing culture shock, because of the huge difference in uncivilized country and civilized country. Another reason that peter was going through difficulties was because of skin color which is also known as racism. Peter was having a thought that he was too black which made him depressed because everyone had looked down on him. For example, the school counselor had looked down on peter just because he was from the refugee camp, with no parents and was too black who had never got education before. Also when he was working at the supermarket, the boss have used him to do hard work since he was easily to deal with because he was uneducated. Therefore, he had been told to work outside under the sun, because as he was black, and is from Africa the boss had thought that Peter was used to heat and could work better than the White people as he could stand it. I thinkg the main reason that is causing the lost boys to face all the difficulties is because of the language. Peter couldnt speak English properly and therefore had been looked down from many other teachers and friends. At first, he couldnt make new friends because people had been ignoring him and looking down on him that he couldnt speak English properly. As he was dissapointed from being ignored Peter proves that he could speak English by taking ESL classes and really participating in all his classes. Peter had studied really well and had manage to prove that he could speak Enlgish and that people like him can get education therefore they should not look down. He had proved this by getting a letter from National Honor Society. At the end Peter overcomes the problem by graduating high school and getting scholarship to go to University. He had manage to face the problem because he had never given up his dream and worked really hard. Peter had assimilated to the new culture as well, and had managed to succeed his goal that he had dreamed of.

Julius Caesar

Caesar has been convinced by his wife, Calpurina that he should stay home since she had a really bad dream of his statue the night before Idles of March. However, not just because his wife convinced him, in his private he was showing scaredness of remembering what the soothsayer was saying. Therefore, he had just sent his servent for a sacrifice from the preist. Then Decius arrives at Caesar's home to take him to the Capitol, but Caesar stops him and have a conversation, telling the truth only to Decius as he blieves in him that his wife Calpurina had a bad dream about Caesar's statue. Therefore, Decius quickly thinks out of a plan to make Calpurina's dream in a good way in order to make the conspritors plan work out.

The significance of this passage is the characterization we see in Decius and Caesar. It is because when Decius quickly thinks out of a plan to continue his role in killing Caesar, he changes Calpurina's dream into a good way, and also when Caesar told him to tell the Romes he would not attend, he asked for a reason incase they laughed at him. This shows that he is very intelligent of making people believe in him very easily, and he is really good at tricking people. Moreover, Caesar shows that he is a short minded, and thinker because he gets tricked by Decius. Caesar also shows the difference of his private and public because in public he acts as if he is brave and is not scared of Idles of March. However, in private he is actually concerned about it and asks the sevant to get a sacrifice. This characterizes that he is suspicious, as he is actaully overthinking in private.

Decius Caesar, all hail! Good morrow, worthy Caesar.
I come to fetch you to the Sneate House

Caesar Aned you are come in very happy thime
To bear my greeting to the senators
And tell them that I will not come today:
Cannot is false; and that I dare not, falser;
I will not come today. Tell them so, Decius

Calpurnia Say he is sick

Caesar: Shall Caesar send a lie?
Have I in conquest stretch'd mine arm so far,
To be afeard to tell greybeards the truth?
Decius, go tell them Caesar wil not come.

Decius Most mighty Caesar, let me know some cause
Lest I be laugh'd ar when I tell them so.

Caesar The causee is in my will: I will not come;
That is enough to satisfy the Senate.
But for your private satisfaction,
Because I love you, I will let you know:
Calpurnia here, my wife, stays me at home.
She dreamt tonight she saw my statue,
Which like a fountain with an hundred spouts
Did run pure blood; and many lusty Romans
Came smiling, and did bathe their hands in it.
And these does she apply for warnings and portents
And evils imminent; and on her knee
Hath begg'd that I will stay at home today.

Decius This dream is all amiss interpreted;
It was a vision fair and fortunate:
Y our statue spouting blood in may pipes
In which so many smiling Romans bath'd,
Signifies that from you great Rome shall suck
Reviving blood, and that great men shall press
For tinctures, stains, relics, and cognizance.
This by Calpurnia's dream is signified

Caesar And this way have you well expounded it.

Decius I have, when you have heard what I can say:
And know it now. The Senate have concluded
To give this day a crown to mighty Caesar.
If you shall send them word you will not come,
Their minds may change. Besides, it were a mock
Apt to be render'd, for some one to say,'
Break up the Senate till another time,
When Caesar's wife shall meet with better dreams.'
If Caesar hid himself, shall they not whisper
'Lo, Caesar is afraid'?
Pardon me, Caesar; for my dear dear love
To your procceding bids me tell you this,
And reason to my love is liable.

Caesar How foolish do your fears seem now, Calpurnia!
I am ashamed I did yield to them.
Give me my robe, for I will go.

Void Quetions

If I were to give a title to this story I would call this by 'The Black box'' because the story isn't mostly about the lottery but its about the Black box. Even though the black box was introduced mostly at the end of the story, it gave me the most tension and I was so eager to find out. While reading this I knew that something bad was going to happen since the black dot meant a bad sign. However, when the end of the story wasn't given to me I was very curious and wanted to find out the next part of the story. When the mystery paper was handed to me with the black dot on it I was very nervous. I was thinking that there's a test for the people who got black dot. Moreover, even I was very curious I did follow the instructions because I thought if I did something bad would happen to me. The black box seemed to be mysterious, but the black dot created more tension to me. My predictions were correct about something bad happening and I felt proud of myself. I think that the author left voids in the story, therefore, it would create tension, and to make people ask questions, and to keep you focused in the story. The no title the author made seems as if entire thing was a void, because it felt empty. Moreover, with no ending seemed to make me curious and started asking questions in my mind. The clues at the end were actually more mysterious but without some of them would have been better. The mystery paper, delayed gratification caused lots of tension because it was until 5 o' clock and I couldn't forget it because as I kept opening my locker, it would remind me of the black dot which made me nervous everytime.

Power of Void

The International School of Kuala Lumpur (silence) provides an exceptional education (silence) that challenges each student to develop the attitudes, skills, knowledge and understanding to become (silence) a highly successful, spirited, socially responsible global citizen.

PART 1

I think I would put the word 'silience' before the school mission statements because it clearly explains deeper understanding of the statements as it draws the listeners, and readers attention. Futhermore, by putting silence right before a highly successful, spirited, socially responsible global citizen works because it creates a void as it is introducing the school's goal, therefore the statement would make the listener, reader stay focused with it. The statement creates tension to the audience because it makes them curious, and ask questions about where the school statement would lead their children to and what will happen next. As the parents want their children to have good education they would be more focused on the school's mission goals, therefore I think putting silence before the school mission statement will create a void.

PART2

The composers tend to create tension in a variety of ways, and one way is creating a silence during a piece because it makes the listener wait for the important part. Similarly, the composer also uses pause and release by going back to the normal state of the piece. These kind of tension makes the listener curious and confused on why there's a silence. Moreover, by creating a tension could maybe change the listeners effect on the music, for example, at first the listener might think the music is boring but as the composer makes tension he/she might change her thoughts about it. Therefore, creating tension could create a void as the audience start making questions and hangs on to the music.
